2011: Bering Sea. Aleutians Islands - Kamtchatka.
Download the FolderGOALS Does the Steller sea cow, known also as Steller's Rhytine, have really completely disappeared or are there still some left, hidden in remote and isolated islands of the North Pacific? The sea cow is a very wide ranging environmental study topic, calling on numerous specificities: - Direct observation: Observation and identification of marine mammals: cetaceans, sea lions, seals, walruses. - Botanical observation: Looking for the Steller sea cow means having an interest in its immediate environment: its fodder, kelp (quantity, type, localization). This is linked to geographic exploration: localize the mouth of the rivers. Study the terrain and its resources. - Zoological orientation: The sea cow studies have shown that its tightly folded skin contained a great number of parasites and specific crustaceans. Do they still exist? On other marine mammals? - Bone study: the only concrete element of its actual existence are the skeletons that have been left. If the sea cow still exists, it should be possible to locate bones. Identification and datation of beached bones. - Ethnological study: Are there memories of this animal in the cultures of indigenous peoples? What was its name in their languages? (The cow being, as Steller points out, a name given as a typically western analogy!). Are there legends or stories that involve the sea cow? Are there rites, masks, dances? Traditional use of the sea cow resources: coverings for boats, clothing, weapons, food… - The philosophical dimension: Seeking for an animal which has supposedly disappeared is like a suspense investigation in which myth (the legend about the animal) wraps around reality (the practical study of the environment, people, history). Like writer Karin Huet puts it, it’s an “applied dream”. Finally, such a search is fundamentally an opening of the mind to put it on alert, keen on observation, calling on perceptions and intuitions. Paying attention to the world and those who people it. Being imaginative and creative. Being human in the positive meaning of the word!!!
Previous route for the 2011 expedition
Between May and September 2011 the ship “Le Manguier” will conduct an expedition in the Bering Sea revolving around research on the Steller sea cow
Despite the 8 months paperwork, we couldn't get the autorization ultra-special (...) to anchor in the Bering's Islands, reference islands concerning the Steller sea cow. The expedition 2011 has been changed. The sailing has been both cultural and artistic: study of the history and the culture of the Aleut and Alutiiq people. and russian-american colonization. Artistic creation from "marine débris and beach combing". More informations available on the
