Captain Philippe HERCHER, expedition leader Born in 1955, Philippe Hercher hails from Bastia in Corsica. Starting at age ten, he discovers sailing and the maritime world in the Bay of Saint-Florent. He leaves Bastia for his first expedition in 1976 onboard the Curza, a 21 ft sailboat. In 1979, he leaves again from Bastia on the Curza II, a sailboat under 33 ft built by his own hands. He becomes a Cape Horner in 1982 after a 4-month expedition in Patagonia. He creates and manages for almost ten years a shipyard, Multicascos, in Cabo Frio, Brasil, where he settled for a while. Back in France in 1993, he dedicates his activities to associations working to highlight the maritime heritage of the region by creating an association called “Rivages de Méditérranée” (Mediterranean shores). In 2002, he purchases Le Manguier from the French navy and starts transforming it into a ship fit for exploration.
